Four Event Highlights
1. A 5K/2-mile walk will begin at 7 a.m. in front of the McPherson County Old Mill Museum, 120 Mill St. Cost is $20 which includes a T-shirt.
2. The second annual Kubb tournament begins at 9 a.m. in Swensson Park, 400 block of N. Main Street. The object of the traditional Nordic lawn game is to knock over wooden blocks by throwing wooden sticks at them. Register at Hemslöjd, 201 N. Main St. ($25 per three-person team), or call 785-227-2053 for more information.
3. Midsummer's Festival begins at 9 a.m. with the traditional blowing of the birch horn and a processional from the Hemslöjd to the center of downtown. The free events last until 4 p.m.
4. The raising of the Majstång (maypole) will begin at 6:30 p.m. in Heritage Square, located at 121 Mill St. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. The pole is lowered and decorated with garland and flowers by members of the community. Eight to ten local folk dancers in traditional costumes raise the pole with one 9-foot and three 12-foot wooden paddles and rope. Once erected, dancing takes place dusk. This event is free.
