A central Stafford County property owner parked his truck up next to his home over the top of some cheatgrass. Shortly thereafter he came outside to find fire – under and around his truck – with the wind quickly spreading it to the surrounding farm grounds.
There were a number of buildings and trees on fire by the time firefighters arrived. Firefighters from St. John, Macksville, and Hudson responded to the scene. A large front end loader was utilized to push in the some of the heavily fire damaged buildings.
Firefighters did an incredible job of keeping the fire away from the home and out of the shelter belt north of the home. The cause of the fire is thought to be the truck’s exhaust system igniting the cheatgrass.
Firefighters remained on scene for approximately two hours.
*Be VERY CAREFUL with anything that might ignite dry grass. We have had some rain, but conditions are still VERY DRY!
