  • It was a rough weekend for the McPherson American Legion Seniors, as they went 1-3 in a pair of home doubleheaders.
Post 24 fell to Salina 15-2 and 13-5 in Saturday’s doubleheader. Sunday, McPherson won game one over Junction City 7-6 after nine innings, then dropped an 8-3 decision in game two.
Against Salina, McPherson gave up 13 runs in the first three innings, as pitcher Alex Ruxlow struggled on the mound and Post 24 struggled at the plate.
Ruxlow was dinged for nine runs, eight unearned, off five hits in his one inning.
“We got behind early and couldn’t mount any offense,” McPherson coach Craig Marshall said. “Alex wasn’t as sharp on the mound after our seven day layoff from game competition.”
Game two was a bit more even through five innings, as McPherson held a 5-4 lead going into the sixth.
Salina, however, unloaded for nine runs in the inning to claim the win.
Steven Gonzalez pitched five innings, giving up seven runs, six earned, off of four hits. He struck out five and walked four in taking the loss.
Sunday’s doubleheader opened with a nine-inning marathon against Junction City. McPherson (3-8) held a 4-2 lead going into the seventh, but the Jays brought home four runs in the top of the inning to steal the lead.
McPherson tied it back up in the bottom of the seventh, setting up Alex Ruxlow to drive home Brodie Burney in the ninth for the walk-off win. Ruxlow also picked up the win, pitching for four innings in relief of Aaron Marshall.
“Aaron pitched well for five innings and deserved to win the game,” Craig Marshall said. “Losing the lead in the seventh, coming back to tie it and winning the game in the ninth showed great character.”
McPherson couldn’t get their bats going until the fifth inning of game two, as they mustered only three hits in the 8-3 loss.
The seniors are on the road tonight against Great Bend.
