  • The McPherson Post 24 Juniors had a solid showing in the 2013 Braves Classic in Great Bend, finishing the weekend 3-2.
McPherson (11-2) had both of their losses in the tournament come at the hands of Buhler. They fell in game one Saturday to Buhler 11-4 after giving up five runs in the first inning. Jacob Loecker took the loss, as he took over in the fifth inning for Nelson Steinert. Loecker gave up eight runs, all earned, off nine hits. He struck out four and walked one.
McPherson had an easier time in their other two Saturday games, blowing out Hutchinson 15-3 and decimating Garden City 20-0.
Griffin Myers had four RBI’s on two hits in the Hutchinson win, which saw McPherson rip off a nine-run second inning.
Cody Starkel was the driving force, both offensively and defensively, in the rout of Garden City. Starkel was 3-for-3, including a triple in the fourth, with three RBI’s and three runs scored. On the mound, he gave up one hit and struck out seven.
Sunday saw McPherson drop Hays 16-4, jumping out early thanks to an RBI double by Marcus McDaniel.
McDaniel also picked up the win on the mound, allowing four runs over five innings. He struck out five, walked five and gave up three hits.
The win set up a rematch with Buhler. McPherson held a 4-3 lead going into the sixth, but a Buhler rally netted four runs and a 7-4 win.
Due to space constraints, the box score will appear in Wednesday’s Sentinel.
Post 24 has yet another chance at revenge against Buhler, as they will be on the road tonight at 4 p.m. for a doubleheader.
