  • The McPherson Lady Express U16 squad rolled through the South Lakes Hawaiian Hitfest this weekend in Wichita, going 5-0 and capturing the U16 championship.
McPherson went 3-0 in pool play on Saturday, opening up with an outstanding performance on the mound from Julie Sinclair in a 6-0 route of the Wichita Thunder.
Sinclair threw a one-hitter and struck out eight Wichita batters en route to the win.
The Express opened up with a three-run first inning, sparked by a Madison Hoffman RBI double to center field. Chelsey Kerr drove in Hoffman the very next at-bat with a ground ball single to center.
McPherson followed up the Wichita performance with an 8-0 against the Salt City Crush. They scored seven runs in the first three innings, including a Jasmine Wann two-run home run in the third inning.
Allison Weber picked up the win, giving up four hits, striking out five and walking none.
McPherson’s final Saturday game paired them up against the Salina Nemesis, where the Express needed a three-run sixth inning to pull out a 4-1 win.
The game was tied 1-1 going into the top of the sixth, when Chelsey Kerr drove a fly ball to center that scored Kiley Kerr. Wann then followed that up with a two-RBI single that solidified the win.
Sinclair picked up the win in five innings of work, giving up one run off one hit and striking out three.
Weber worked the sixth to earn the save.
Sunday brought a rematch with the Nemesis in McPherson’s first game in bracket play, which they won 5-0. Sinclair once more gave up only one hit in the win, striking out six and walking none.
Hoffman picked up four RBI’s on two hits for the Lady Express, including a grand slam to center field off the first pitch in the second inning. Hannah Marshall added a solo homer of her own in the bottom of the fifth.
McPherson then faced the NCK Adrenaline in the championship game Sunday, winning that contest 9-1.
Weber threw a no-hitter to win the Hitfest title. The Adrenaline’s only score came off a wild pitch in the bottom of the third after a fielding error and a walk by McPherson.
McPherson scored four in the top of the first and controlled the rest of the way. They added two in the third and Marissa Axelson belted a three-run homer to center field in the fourth.
