  • The Sexual Assault/Domestic Violence Center of McPherson has kept busy during the course of the previous year.
Director Candace Dixon reported to county commissioners Tuesday  McPherson County remains one of the busiest centers of activity compared to other similar facilities in local counties. The center provided services for 106 clients from McPherson County in 2012.
Dixon also said 152 incidents of domestic violence were reported during 2012, a 53.1 percent increase from 2011.
Dixon said although the number of incidents are up the number of younger individuals using their services are down.
“Younger kids just don't come knocking on your door,” she said. “Not many kids under 24 come in just because they have relationship problems, except for a few wanting a restraining order.”
Dixon said younger individuals are more prone to release their problems across social media which, she says, can be dangerous.
“Once it's out on the Internet, it can't be taken back,” she said. “And with older predators out there and the risk of sex trafficking, younger girls especially can be put at risk.”
Dixon said some children may have grown up in abusive homes and feel the abuse is normal.
“Some have grown up in these homes and don't see anything wrong with it,” she said. “A son may grow up, see his father hit his mother and become an abuser himself.”
The center hasn't utilized social media as much as traditional communication, but Dixon noted younger employees within the organization are beginning to utilize social media as part of the center's outreach.
The budget for the center is expected to be about the same as last year. Dixon said some cuts are anticipated and will be prepared for accordingly.
The Sexual Assault/Domestic Violence Center of McPherson is at 112 W. Marlin, Suite 208, and can be contacted at 620-241-6615 or on a 24-hour line at 1-800-701-3630.
