  • The McPherson City Golf Tournament turns 30 this year and the competition promises to be just as hot as the prior 29 tournaments.
The 2012 iteration was won by Central Christian College golfer Treg Fawl after a play-off with Ryan Schmid. Fawl and Schmid both shot a 226 over the three days of the tournament, necessitating the playoff.
Fawl hit par on the first hole to claim the title, his second straight and third in four years.
Fawl is only the third player in tournament history to win at least three championships, with the late Ray Hague still the all-time leader with nine titles.
Fawl had a solid junior season for the Tigers, finishing in the top five in all four spring tournaments, including third place finishes in the CBC Mustang Invitational in March and the Sterling Invitational in April.
Schmid may not have won last year’s individual crown, but he did win the two-man trophy with partner Chad Alexander, with the two shooting a combined 205 (69-67-69).
This year’s tournament begins tomorrow at Turkey Creek Golf Course, with tee times set by the players and play beginning at 9 a.m.
Saturday’s play will be at Rolling Acres Golf Course, with tee times to be at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.
Sunday’s round will be at the McPherson Country Club, with shot gun starts at 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., based on team flights.
