  • The McPherson U-16 Lady Express stayed perfect on the season by sweeping the competition over the weekend at the A & B West State Tournament in Augusta.
    McPherson opened up the tournament Friday with a close game against the Arkansas City Crew, winning 4-2. The Express led 3-0 going into the fifth inning, including a home run by Jasmine Wann in the third. Arkansas City scored two in the top of the frame, to make it 3-2, but Marrisa Axelson homered in the bottom of the fifth to put the exclamation point on the wind.
    Allison Weber went the full game, giving up two hits on five runs. She struck out six and walked two.
    McPherson came back Saturday to beat host Augusta 8-2.
    Augusta got two runs in the second, but McPherson responded with two-run innings in the first and second to go up 4-2. They exploded four runs in the sixth, triggered by a Kiley Kerr RBI single, which was followed up by a two-run double from Madison Hoffman and an RBI single from Chelsey Kerr.
    Julie Sinclair pitched 5 2/3 innings for the win, giving up two runs off nine hits. She struck out five and walked two.
    Sunday, McPherson went 2-0 against the Wichita Mustangs to win the A/B West Tournament championship. The Express (20-0) won both games by a score of 9-0.
    Game one was highlighted by a Wann grand slam to left field off her first pitch in the second inning, putting an exclamation point on a six-run inning.
    Weber picked up the win, going the full game and giving up only four runs. She struck out one.
    Axelson and Wann both homered again, with Axelson’s coming in the top of the third off the first pitch to center field. Wann knocked a two-run blast to center in the fourth.
    Sinclair pitched the shutout, allowing no runs on five hits. She struck out seven and walked one.
