  • A summer series of films geared toward children will begin this week.
The Kids Summer Series will feature family friendly movies rated G or PG in the coming months. All shows will begin at 10 a.m. and will be shown at the B & B McPherson Cinema IV every Thursday through Aug. 1. Admission is $3.
Movies will show in the following order: “How to Train Your Dragon,” “Despicable Me,” “Shrek,” “Alvin and The Chipmunks,” “An American Tale” and “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.”
Ann Engel, McPherson Main Street director, said she doesn’t recall a series like this happening recently in McPherson.
The idea came when Engel was brainstorming summer ideas for The Main Event, which occurs on the first Thursday of every month in McPherson and involves events and businesses staying open late.
While exploring ideas, Anne Hassler, director of McPherson Convention and Visitors Bureau, saw local towns hosted a similar movie series and looked into bringing it to town.
Sponsors signed up to foot the $1,000 bill. They include McPherson Main Street, McPherson Convention and Visitors Bureau, McPherson Family Life Center, Dr. Clay and Olivia Fetsch and St. Francis Community Services.
“I think that anything we can offer for kids in the summer is good. They’re getting out where there’s other people and there’s a chance to interact,” Engel said. “It’s something the whole family can do, and it’s affordable. I think the movies are a nice variety and some of them aren’t that old.”
Engel said this is just one of the activities the McPherson area offers children and families this summer, and she was surprised recently when she overheard someone say there is nothing to do.
“It just floored me because I think there’s so much for kids to do in the summer if they just look,” she said. “I’m amazed at how many things there are.”
She cited activities through the YMCA, McPherson Recreation Commission, McPherson Arts Alliance and the McPherson Public Library as examples.
