  • Snap, crunch, crunch, smack, yum.
These are the not the usual sounds you hear in the bastion of quiet — the library.
However, the McPherson Public Library had a a Come and Go Potato Chip Taste-Off Wednesday.
Bowls of different kinds of potato chips were lined up on a table. Walk-in participants taste tested each flavor of potato chip and rated them on a ballot sheet.
The event was in keeping with this year's reading program theme — Dig Into Reading.
Spuds grow in the ground. Chips come from potatoes. If the noisy snacks encouraged more children to read, why not?
Participants could vote which chip they thought was the grossest, greasiest, saltiest and their overall favorite. The potato chip flavors included honey mustard, chili con queso, cheeseburger, dill pickle and pork rinds.
Abby Bohnenblust, teen services assistant for McPherson Public Library, and Mandy Martin, children's coordinator, were the creative minds behind the potato-themed programs.
"She and I came up with it," Bohnenblust said. "The theme this year is Dig Into Reading, so we wanted to go along with the whole potato idea."
The children and adults who took part said they agreed.
"Very interesting program," said adult participant Glenda Bayles.
The pork rinds and the spicy chili con queso didn't seem to be the popular chips. The most preferred were the honey mustard chips.
"It's spicy!" said a child participant, scrunching up her nose at the spicy taste of the Chili Con Queso chip.
The library was hot to another potato program Thursday called Spuds in Your Duds, during which children planted potatoes in jeans. Upcoming library events include movie nights, a hairstyle tutorial, a self-defense class, a yoga class and a comedy act.
