  • Central Christian College was given a one-year extension of its special-use permit to build a new $4 million softball and baseball complex south of McPherson.
The extension was approved by McPherson County Commission at its meeting Monday.
Central is still in negotiations with the railroad concerning access to the property on which the project will be built, which is south of Avenue A, west of Central Street and north of the NCRA, said Kenneth Cook, McPherson County Planning and Zoning director.
The railroad owns the land on which the college plans to build the road into the complex.
Gaining this access was a condition of the planning commission’s support for the project.
The land is currently unimproved and is being used as a buffer between the refinery and residential housing in the area. NCRA owns the land but has agreed to a long-term lease with the school so it can build the sports complex on the site.
Central does not have its own fields, and conflicts have arisen in scheduling use of the mostly McPherson Recreation Commission controlled fields.
The grass-field complex is part of a greater plan by the college to put more emphasis on athletics.
Cook said the college is still trying to raise funds for the completion of the project as well.
The college’s special-use permit has been extended to July 31, 2014.
Hal Hoxie, Central president and spokesman, could not be reached for comment on this story.

The county approved a zoning permit for a barn sale at 2959 Arapaho Road, Moundridge. The permit will allow the owners of the property to have sale that will include about 60 vendors. The applicant told the county as many as 2,000 may attend the event, which is set for Oct. 5.
