The McPherson Post 24 Juniors struggled against the Salina Hawks Wednesday at Dean Evans Stadium, giving up the lead late in both halves of the doubleheader to fall 11-10 and 6-4.
Post 24 opened up the first inning with a five-run explosion to jump out in front of Salina. Marcus McDaniel started the scoring with a single up the middle that scored Nelson Steinert. McDaniel would then score on a wild pitch from Hawks starter Cody Walters.
Jacob Loecker scored in the third inning off another wild pitch from Walters to make it 6-0 McPherson but the Hawks started fighting back in the bottom of the third, scoring three runs.
McPherson responded with two in the fourth, but Salina would score seven unanswered runs to take a 10-8 lead into the seventh inning.
Post 24 did reclaim the lead, however, in the seventh, as Kolby Reed knocked a two-RBI double to center field tying the game at 10-10. Unfortunately, Salina scored off a pitching error from Starkel to get the game one win.
McPherson had a 2-1 lead on Salina after the first four innings of game two Wednesday, with Barrett coming up with two RBIs.
McDaniel and Starkel both scored on wild pitches in the sixth to move the McPherson (18-5) lead to 4-1, but Salina once more rallied late in the game, this time coming up with five runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the 6-4 lead.
Starkel took the loss in both games, working just the last inning of game one and all six of game two. He gave up seven runs total, one earned, and eight hits. He struck out three and walked one.
McPherson is at home tonight against Nickerson. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
