The McPherson Post 24 Juniors know their fate for the Class A Zone 5 Tournament starting on Monday, and it will be against a familiar foe.
The Juniors, who finished their regular season Thursday night with a record of 19-7 after splitting with Nickerson, will face the Salina Eagles 17U team Monday at Newton. McPherson went 2-1 against the Eagles (10-14) this summer, first by sweeping a doubleheader June 2 and then dropping a single game Tuesday. The second half of the planned doubleheader was cancelled due to lightning.
Post 24 has only faced one other opponent out of the six-team Zone 5 field in Newton. McPherson defeated Newton (22-5) 10-9 June 24. The second game of the doubleheader was cancelled in the bottom of the second inning due to bad weather.
Andover comes into the zone tournament as the top seed with a record of 20-4. Newton is the second seed, followed by Winfield (19-5). Salina and Clearwater (10-14) are the fifth and sixth seeds, respectively.
McPherson and Salina will be the late game Monday evening at Newton. A win will have Post 24 playing Newton, who has a bye into the second round of the tournament. A loss will have them facing the loser of Winfield and Clearwater, with that winner facing Andover.
The tournament is double-elimination, with the championships to be held Friday evening at 6 p.m. The winner of the zone tournament will advance to the Class A State Tournament July 24-28 in Burlington.
