  • Following a 2012/13 season that drew capacity attendance at every performance, the Wichita Grand Opera announced an ambitious schedule for its 2013/14 Season.
This includes a performance of the “Barber of Seville” at 2:30 p.m. June 1 at the McPherson Opera House in McPherson.
The opera will be performed in English.
In this opera, a young Count is hopelessly in love with a well-endowed young lady, but her greedy old guardian wants to get his own hands on her assets.
Everyone’s favorite barber decides to intervene, but finds out the young lady is a step ahead of them all. Italian star baritone Stefano de Peppo sings the role of the blustering Doctor Bartolo, and Sharin Apostolou and Kaitlyn Costello share the role of the young lady with the impressive dowry. Internationally-renowned stage director James Marvel returns to Wichita after engagements in Sulmona, Italy and Paris, France, to direct this new production performed in English.
In addition to the the “Barber of Seville”, the Wichita Grand Opera also will perform in Wichita: Tchaikovsky’s “Sleeping Beauty” on  Jan. 5; Rossini’s “William Tell” on Feb. 22; Puccini’s “Tosca” on April 12; Minkus’ “Don Quixote” on April 26; Chairmen’s “The Great Gatsby” on May 10; and Opera on the Lake on June 21.
“Wichita is in for a treat this season, WGO’s premiere of Rossini’s masterpiece  William Tell, in addition to two new productions of opera and two magnificent ballet productions. William Tell won’t be produced anywhere else in the U.S. this season, and it’s just the third new American production in the last 75 years!”  Wichita Grand Opera General Director Parvan Bakardiev said.
