Despite temperatures approaching 100 degrees, children and their families still lined the shores of the Lakeside Park Saturday for the McPherson Fishing Derby.
One-hundred forty-four children ages 18 months to 15 years participated in the derby, which was cosponsored by the McPherson Recreation Commission and Junior Bassmasters.
Participation in the event was down only slightly compared to last year, which Eddie Reeder, rec commission program director, said was good considering the warm temperatures.
Reeder said the derby was a positive partnership that helps children in the community keep active during the summer.
"It is a great event to get kids outside," he said. "More than half of those kids would have been inside the whole day if it wasn't for the derby."
The Junior Bassmasters support the program as a way of promoting an interest in fishing among youth.
"It is fun to see the kids and the little kids," said Devin Casebeer, a Junior Bassmaster and volunteer for the derby. "We hope we can get more people involved in the club and more people interested in fishing."
Casebeer said he has been fishing since he was little himself and fished in derbies when he was younger.
"Catching fish is fun," he said of his experiences in prior derbies. "Knowing you placed first, second or third, makes you proud."
Maddie Dobson, 9, was getting a lot of bites Saturday night but not a lot of fish.
She wasn't too bothered.
"It's fun. I like to fish," she said.
Prizes were awarded in several overall classes as well as first, second and third in three age divisions for most inches caught.
