  • Obituary: Edna Ruth ‘Gramma Ed’ Bruce

  • Edna R. Bruce, 96, of McPherson, Kan., passed away at 3:06 p.m., Sunday, July 14, while in the company of family members, at McPherson Hospital.

  • Edna R. Bruce, 96, of McPherson, Kan., passed away at 3:06 p.m., Sunday, July 14, while in the company of family members, at McPherson Hospital.
    Edna was born on Jan. 20, 1917, on her parents’ farm, rural McPherson,  the daughter of Victorilla Oliva (VanNess) and Nathan Rufus Embers.
    Edna attended the Centennial Country School and Galva High School. She took nursing courses later in life.
    Edna was a member of First Christian Church McPherson.
    Through the years Edna was a homemaker and helped her husband who owned and operated Bruce’s Derby Service Station, she worked as a nurse's aide for Hickory Manor Personal Care Center, became a partner along with Anna Parker and owned and operated Parker Nursing Home and retired as owner, operator, partner, and administrator of E & M Rainbow Nursing Home.
    Edna Ruth Embers was united in marriage to Marion Everett Bruce on July 17, 1934, at McPherson. He died on Sept. 29, 1984.
    Surviving family members include her daughter, Trevelyn Grimes and her husband David, of Wichita; her 19 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and numerous great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
    Edna was preceded in death by her parents Nate and Vic Embers; her husband Marion Bruce; sister, Mabel Severson, her brothers, Glen, Ray, and Wayne Embers; her son, Verlyn Bruce, her daughters, Marilyn Winslow and Madonna Earnest; her grandchildren, triplets, Tony, Terry, and Teresa Martin, Cynthia Rae Earnest, Lee Allen Winslow, and Fern Rene Korbe; a great-granddaughter, Abbigail Lynn Starks.   
    Friends are invited to call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 18, 2013,  with family present from 6 to 8 p.m. at Glidden-Ediger Chapel, McPherson.
    The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 19 at the First Christian Church, McPherson, with Pastor Lynn Scott officiating.
    The final resting place will be at the McPherson Cemetery McPherson.
    Memorials are suggested to McPherson Relay For Life in memory of Edna, and they can be sent in care of the Glidden-Ediger Funeral Home; 222 W. Euclid St.; McPherson, KS 67460.
