  • Cody Starkel may just have set the tone for the McPherson American Legion Juniors in the Class A Zone 5 Tournament Tuesday night.
Starkel threw five innings of near flawless baseball in Post 24’s tournament opener against the Salina Eagles at Klein-Scott Field in Newton, as McPherson blasted Salina 10-0.
Starkel faced 16 batters, striking out six. The only mar on what would have otherwise been a perfect game came in the bottom of the second inning, when an Eagle batter reached first on a fielding error.
Nelson Steinert gave McPherson an offensive boost, going 2-for-4 at the plate, which included a triple in the fifth inning that scored Grant Barrett and Ryan Eilths to cap a six-run inning.
Kolby Reed also added two RBIs to the winning effort.
McPherson now faces Newton this evening at 5 p.m. in the winner’s bracket of the Zone 5 Tournament. Post 24 (20-6) will start Marcus McDaniel on the mound.
