  • A late rally by the McPherson American Legion Juniors came up just short Thursday afternoon, as Post 24 saw its season come to a close against the Salina Eagles in the Class A Zone 5 Tournament in Newton.
    Both teams entered the tilt hoping to stave off elimination, as McPherson had lost 5-3 to Newton Wednesday, while the Eagles had fallen to Post 24 Tuesday, then won 9-5 against Clearwater Wednesday.
    Salina held a 4-0 lead going into the McPherson third inning, where Post 24 managed to get a run across off a Marcus McDaniel single to center field.
    Salina responded with another run in the top of the fourth, putting McPherson in a 5-1 hole and staring at elimination from postseason.
    McPherson refused to go quietly, however, as they put together a rally in the bottom of the sixth inning. Jacob Loecker loaded the bases after reaching on an Eagle error, which set up Grant Barrett to drive in Griffin Myers off an infield single.
    Jeremy Krehbiel then drove in Kolby Reed off a single to left field, followed quickly by Barrett scoring off a wild pitch to make it 5-4 Salina.
    Krehbiel advanced o third, but was left on base after Caleb Schmidt was struck out.
    McPherson had a chance to tie it in the seventh with McDaniel on second base, but couldn’t get the run home before the third out.
    Schmidt took the loss after working the first four innings. He gave up five runs off of nine hits, striking out six and walking two. Nelson Steinert came in during the fifth inning to close out the came, giving up two hits and walking one.
    McDaniel led the way offensively by going 2-for-4 with an RBI.
    McPherson ends their season at 21-8.
