  • Bethany College announces the hiring of Charlie Carpenter as offensive line coach.
Carpenter joins the Bethany College football staff and reunites with head football coach Manny Matsakis from their time together with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
His offensive line allowed the fewest sacks in the Canadian Football League (CFL) during the 2009 season while also leading the way for Fred Reid to rush for 260 yards and set a Blue Bomber single-game rushing record versus the British Columbia Lions as the offense amassed a rushing total of 364 yards, another club record.
"There is no doubt that he is both a disciplinarian and tactician,” Matsakis said of Carpenter. “But given his vast knowledge, experience, and understanding of the game, his most endearing qualities may very well be his passion and his loyalty. With a strong military background, coach Carpenter brings a daily intensity to the office that is rarely rivaled in the game of football."
A proven winner, Carpenter holds two Grey Cup rings that he won in back-to-back seasons with two different teams--the first, with the Baltimore Stallions in 1995 and the second with the Toronto Argonauts in 1996 as the club's offensive line coach.
The former U.S. Marine is a ten-year CFL coaching veteran who has been an offensive coordinator with both the B.C. Lions from 1997 to 1998 and the Ottawa Rough Riders in 1995.
He has held coaching positions at Division 1-AA Murray State, Cumberland Community College and various high schools in Ohio.
Carpenter, a native of Loveland, Ohio, holds a bachelor's degree in physical education from Murray State University.
