  • Central Christian College senior Mark Gayer will be amongst the field of the 103rd Kansas Amateur Match Play Championship starting Tuesday morning.
Gayer advanced to the championship after shooting a 75 during a sectional qualifier June 26 at Eagle Bend Golf Course, tying him with seven other golfers at 17th place.
He will be paired during the opening two days of the five-day championships with Lawrence’s Grady Millikan and Ryan Argotsinger of Lee’s Summit. The trio tees off Tuesday at 1:10 p.m. and Wednesday at 8:40 a.m.
The championship will be played at Indian Hills Country Club in Mission Hills. The course, an A.W. Tillinghast design, possesses mature oaks and subtle hills and slopes, making it a shot-makers course.
“Length off the tee is helpful on some holes, but accuracy is the real need to be able to score well on the par-70 layout,” Kim Richey, KGA Executive Director, said in a press release. “Our 2013 champion will have accuracy off the tee and to the green, followed by a good eye for reading breaks on the greens, which can be pretty wide and scary.”
The field consists of 150 golfers, including four past Kansas Amateur champions. That counts Bryan Norton, who is the only two-time champion, winning in 1980 and 2002. Defending champion Kyle Smell turned pro and is not among the field.
