McPherson High School graduate Sam Starr, a member of the Kansas State University Fishing Team, will be competing in the B.A.S.S. College National Championship Aug. 1-3 on Lake Chatuge , near Hiawassee, Ga.
Starr and his K-State team partner Alex Fulkerson, recently qualified for the event by finishing eighth in the Midwestern Regional on Lake Sugema, Iowa.
They will be competing against 67 two-man teams from 49 universities in the U.S. and Mexico. Up for grabs are scholarships, school bragging rights and a berth in the 2014 Bassmaster Classic.
The tournament weigh-ins may be seen live online at www.bassmaster.com/video/carhartt-college-national-championship-weigh or on ESPN U (COX channel 244 or Dish channel 42) Aug. 4 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. The weigh-in willl also be shown at a future date on NBC Sports.
Strarr, a 2011 graduate from MHS, is a former Kansas High School State Bass Fishing Champion and Former Bass Federation Jr. State Champion. He was also the founder of the McPherson Jr. Bassmasters. He is a junior at Kansas State majoring in political science, with a minor in business.
Starr is currently ranked No. 9 in the nation of collegiate anglers according to bassrankings.com. Starr and Fulkerson are also ranked 10th as a team.
Friends and family will be having a quick send off for Starr at the west side of Wall Park on Friday at 3 p.m. to wish him luck.
