  • The McPherson Aquapups wrapped their up their season last weekend in the Division II Championships in Emporia, with five swimmers competing.
Alex Houston had the top finishes for the Aquapups in the 10-year-old division, bringing home a gold medals in the 50-yard backstroke (49.22 seconds) and the 50 butterfly (49.22). Houston also won silver in the 100 butterfly (1:58.26), which coach Bonnie Sue Fisher noted was the first time Houston had swum the race.
"I was really proud of how well Alex kept his focus with the level of competition that was at the meet," Fisher said. "We made a few adjustments to his stroke technique and his start and he was able to implement every one of them. It was a great way to wrap up our summer season."
Zane Richter also brought home a medal, taking third in the 100 butterfly in the 17-year-old division with a time of 1:09.35. Richter also dropped 24 seconds off his previous best time in the 200 individual medley, finishing the race in 2:40.78.
Also competing for McPherson at the meet were Amanda Starkel, Emma Williams and Rece Williams.
With the summer season finished, the Aquapups will take a few weeks off before begining the fall, winter and spring seasons in doors at the YMCA. For more information, contact Cheri Gillis at 245-8330.
