After a year of celebrating the 100th anniversary of Gordon Parks’ birth, the Ulrich Museum of Art and Wichita State University completed the centennial celebrations with an acquisition of a portfolio of Parks’ photographs for the Wichita State University Foundation Art Collection.
The portfolio is a set of 12 20 by 16 inch color photographs originally published in a 1956 LIFE magazine photo-essay, The Restraints: Open and Hidden.
Reflecting Parks’ lifelong commitment to social justice, the photographs examine the politics of race and class in the photographer’s signature style that combines both a documentary and artistic approach.
The collection was published by The Gordon Parks Foundation in September 2012 in a limited edition of numbered sets.
It was acquired from the Howard Greenberg Gallery in New York.
