The McPherson Chamber of Commerce Agricultural Committee will host the 14th-annual When Pigs Fly Barbecue Contest and Fly Friday and Saturday at the McPherson Airport.
The event brings awareness to the agriculture community and raises funds for the McPherson County Tom Hunter Agriculture Future of America Scholarship fund.
The scholarship is awarded to 16 McPherson County students pursuing careers in agriculture-related fields.
McPherson Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Jennifer Burch said the event will have plenty for the whole family to enjoy.
“There will be free airplane rides for anyone from the ages of 7 to 18 years old,” Burch said, “and we’ll have a National Federation Turkey Shooting Trailer.” The trailer promotes hunting, allowing participants to shoot turkey-shaped targets with a B.B. gun.
The dairy industry will be represented with free milk samples from Hildebrand Farms Dairy from across their spectrum of flavors, and a Southwest Dairy milking trailer allowing participants to see a live cow being milked.
This year’s barbecue contest will feature more than 30 contestants from across Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri and Texas, and is a Kansas City Barbecue Society sanctioned event, featuring certified judges.
Burch said the event is ultimately for a good cause.
“As a result of this event,” Burch said, “The McPherson Chamber of Commerce Agriculture Committee has been able to award more than $40,000 in scholarship money for McPherson County students that have pursued agricultural studies. It’s a great event to come to not just to learn about agriculture, but also learn about the airport and aviation as well.”
Barbecue contestants will begin arriving at 11 a.m. Friday, with concessions opening for business at 4 p.m.
