Canton Grocery Store L.L.C. has purchased and is expanding into the old convenience store at the corner of U.S. Highway 56 and Kansas Highway 86.
The location, which served as home to a number of convenience store chains through the ’80s and ’90s, is currently in the process of being remodeled for its grand opening.
“We’ve really upgraded the inside,” said Roger Schultz, Canton Grocery Store, L.L.C.’s investor manager and significant stockholder, “and over the last couple of months, I’ve painted and put in a lot of work.”
Schultz is hoping by expanding the operation to the U.S. 56 location, the home company will see improved sales.
“We’ll be taking items like our pies and rolls out there, but it’ll be more a convenience store than a grocery store. Hopefully the location will help us attract some of the highway traffic.”
Schultz is also happy to be able to do something constructive with the location, which has been a prominent eyesore on the edge of Canton for several years.
“Cleaning this place up and doing something with it will really help the entrance to the city,” Schultz said, “and I think it’ll be good for the county as well. It will provide the community with four jobs that weren’t here before.”
Schultz is waiting for various licenses to be approved and expects the expansion will open in about a month. He also hopes to be able to provide gasoline within the time frame of two months once equipment he ordered to do so is installed.
Canton Grocery is hiring employees for the expansion. Those interested in applying should call 620-628-4721.
