The Swedes women's soccer team opened their 2013 season on Saturday, with a road trip to Fremont, Neb., to take on Midland University.
With a 1-1 tie at the end of regulation, Bethany headed into overtime and suffered a 2-1 defeat.
"A battle royale was the theme for [Saturday]," head coach Sean McMannis said. "If it wasn't the heat, it was the tackles. Paige [Wolny] going down with a broken collarbone set the tempo. After that, we were able to score to go up 1-0 into the half."
An unassisted goal by freshman Jovana Canales in the 27th minute of the game sent Bethany into the locker room at halftime with the lead. However, Midland tied the game just under two minutes into the second half.
With a 1-1 tie at the end of regulation, the Swedes and Warriors faced off in overtime. With seconds remaining in overtime, Midland netted their second goal of the day to send Bethany home with a 2-1 opening day loss.
"Tough loss and tough loss in injuries," McMannis said.
The Warriors outshot Bethany 26-10 and had eight corner kicks to Bethany's one.
