  • Members of the McPherson Black Belt Academy recently competed in state and district championships, with multiple students earning titles.
    To earn a state champion title, students compete at Regional, National and World Taekwondo tournaments and earn points for finishing first, second or third in their respective events. The McPherson Black Belt Academy had six champions in 21 categories
     Those winners include Rex Willems, 5th Degree Black Belt in Forms, Sparring, Weapons, Combat Sparring, Xtreme Weapons and Creative Weapons; Ben Hopkins, 2nd Degree Black Belt in Xtreme Forms and Xtreme Weapons; Richard Holloway, 2nd Degree Black Belt in Forms, Sparring, Weapons and Combat Sparring; Elizabeth Metz, 2nd Degree Black Belt in Forms, Sparring, Weapons and Combat Sparring; Montana Brown, 1st Degree Black Belt in Sparring and Combat Weapons; and Mervyn John, Red Belt in Forms, Sparring and Combat Weapons.
    The ATA District Championships is a new tournament added this year. The country was divided into eight districts. The Midwest District Championships were held in Kansas City, consisting of schools from Kansas, Missouri, Colorado and Oklahoma. In order to compete at Districts, each competitor had to be in the top 10 in points in their respective state. The McPherson Black Belt Academy had nine competitors qualify in 33 categories and three came home with titles.
     The three title winners were Willems in Forms, Sparring, Weapons, Combat Sparring, Xtreme Weapons and Creative Weapons; Hopkins, 2nd Degree Black Belt in Xtreme Forms and Xtreme Weapons; and Metz in Sparring.
