  • More than 150 people went to the McPherson Museum & Arts Foundation Hospitality Center grand opening Sunday.
The event took place from 2 to 7 p.m. Tours of the facilities were given every half-hour, and refreshments were served.
The tour included the completed parts of the Hospitality Center, including a theater and a gathering hall.
The tour also went through unfinished exhibit rooms and climate -controlled storage rooms, where museum artifacts are being stored.
Milbert Beckwith, a McPherson resident who attended the event, said he came to see how the new facilities compared to the old ones. He said he went to the old museum the day it closed.
“This new one’s nice,” he said.
Tom and Beverly Bronleewe drove 45 minutes from Sterling to see the new museum. After taking a tour, Tom said the part he liked most was a mural depicting a giant sloth, dire wolves and saber tooth tigers.
This mural will accompany fossils of these animals discovered by Dr. J. Z. Gilbert in the La Brea tar pits in the early 1900s.
Other future displays include a meteorite exhibit, a history of McPherson and a feature exhibit.
It also will  include an exhibit of model trains set up by the Mid Kansas Model Railroaders. This model will feature four different trains as well as McPherson landmarks.
Beverly said she looks forward to bringing others to the museum.
“We have eight grandchildren, and it’ll be fun for them to see the trains,” she said.
Carla Barber, museum director, said exhibits should be set up by Nov. 30. The museum will have another grand opening at that time.
More than 125 attended the members only open house Saturday, and about 100 attended the ribbon cutting Thursday.
