  • 2015 will see construction start on a Mohawk Road interchange with Interstate 135.
The project will be a collaboration between the county, the city, and the Kansas Department of Transportation’s statewide T-Works initiatives.
The project is set up to occur in two parts. One part, constructed by the state, will see the interchange itself between Mohawk Road and I-135 built with the creation of a road between 16th and 17th Avenues.
The other part will involve the county’s paving of 16th Avenue from Northview to Mohawk roads.
The interchange itself is still in the design phase, and the county will be required to do their paving of 16th Avenue before the K-DOT begins work on the interchange.
McPherson County Public Works Director Tom Kramer said the county is hoping to have the 16th Avenue paving finished by the summer 2015.
“There will be some utility relocation,” Kramer said, “including a Board of Public Utilities water main.”
K-DOT’s current start date on the interchange itself is anticipated to be November 2015.
While he could make no promises as to how long the construction process would take, Kramer thought it could take between 18 months and two years.
“There will probably be no interference traffic-wise requiring serious traffic flow alteration,” Kramer said.
Until final decision of building materials has been made no firm cost can be established, though Kramer believes the paving on 16th Avenue and Mohawk could cost in the area of $17 million.
The county’s cost will be capped at $2 million with the state paying the an estimated $15 million.
The project’s intended goal is to help open McPherson’s industrial park to additional development.
