The St. John-Hudson Lady Tigers lost a tough one at Burrton Tuesday evening playing the Halstead Dragons in three sets 20-25, 25-23, 23-25 in a game of fairly evenly matched teams with a slight edge going to the 3A Dragons. Earlier the Tigers defeated the Burrton Chargers 25-13, 25-13.
The Tigers did have their chances in the Halstead match, but being down by three points (21-24) in the deciding set was just a little too much, even though the Tigers did close the gap 23-24 before the Dragons got the match point.
Earlier in their first match against Burrton, the Tigers had little trouble defeating the Chargers - part of that from serving 13 aces in the first set, perhaps a Tiger record of sorts- Ashlyn Fisher five aces, Jessica Hanson three aces, Maddy Lippoldt two aces, Haley Falk two aces and Taylor Woodward one ace. (During the combined three sets playing the Dragons, the Tigers could only muster up three aces.)
St. John's varsity starts out the season 1-1.
Big smiles were the “order of the day” when St. John's junior varsity won both of their matches, defeating Halstead and Burrton in two sets each to start out their season 2-0. Sophomore Marsena Irvine played so well in the junior varsity matches that she suited up and had major playing time in both varsity matches.
Next on St. John's schedule is Pratt Skyline's Thunderbird Invitational this Saturday in Pool play at Pratt's Community College.
The Tigers's first match will start at 9 am. when they're matched up against a strong Pratt Greenbacks team, followed by matches against the Pretty Prairie Bulldogs at 11 am. and the Stafford Trojans at 2 pm. The other teams playing in Pratt-Skyline's Pool are Skyline, Pawnee Heights, Hodgeman County and Medicine Lodge.
The first and second place winners in each pool will play in the afternoon on Skyline's court, the matches starting shortly after all matches are finished in Pool play. The first place winner in the Skyline Pool will play the second place winner in the PCC Pool. The first place winner in the PCC Pool will play the second place winner in the Skyline Pool. The winners will move on to the championship match while the losers play for third place.
