  • Just ahead of their season opener against Hays, the McPherson High School boys’ soccer team has been ranked fourth in Class 4-1A by the Kansas Soccer Coaches Association.
The Bullpups, coming off a fourth place finish in the 2012 state championships, are aiming for another deep run in the tournament in 2013, and they have the tools to do it, with several returning seniors giving head coach Chris Adrian a lot of weapons.
They include midfielder Ryan Horton, who scored eight goals with 20 assists in 2012, and forward Dylan Blosser, who notched seven goals and 10 assists. Spearheading the defense is senior goalkeeper Dylan Stos and defenders Peter Horton and Adrian Garcia.
“This is a team that lost some goal scorers from last year,” Adrian said, “but is really returning to its core. These boys are extremely motivated after finishing fourth last year and are eager to get this season started.”
McPherson was slotted below AVCTL Div. III opponent Rose Hill, who picked up the top spot in Class 4-1A, perennial power Kansas City Christian, and Topeka Hayden. Wichita Trinity picked up the No. 5 spot on the preseason poll.
The Pups didn’t make the KSCA All-Class rankings, which was headed up by Class 6A No. 1 Washburn Rural. St. Thomas Aquinas, who was No. 1 in 5A, was chosen at No. 2 in the all-class poll, followed by Blue Valley Northwest, Olathe East and Blue Valley North.
Rounding out the all-class Top 10 was St. James Academy at No. 6, followed by Olathe South, Shawnee Mission East, Wichita East and Manhattan.
BV Northwest was picked second in the Class 6A poll, followed by Olathe East, BV North and Olathe South.
The Class 5A poll shows St. James behind St. Thomas Aquinas, followed by Maize South, KC Harmon and Kapaun Mt. Carmel.
The Bullpups open their season tonight against Hays in a home tilt. Match time is at 7:30 p.m. at McPherson Stadium. The JV game is slated to start at 6 p.m.
