McPherson High School finished second in Thursday’s McPherson Invitational, behind the third-ranked team in Class 5.
The Bullpups, who clocked in at No. 3 on the Kansas Tennis Coaches Association Class 4A poll this week, scored 59 team points for second behind first-place finisher Arkansas City, who had 62 points. Derby (57), Great Bend (38) and Valley Center (35) round out the top five. The rest of the field included Newton (27), Wichita West (20), Goddard-Eisenhower (20) and Douglass (7).
Ellea Ediger and the doubles tandem of Emily Ediger and Camry Holle had the top finishes for McPherson, as both finished in second place. Ellea Ediger went 3-1, falling only in the finals to Wichita West’s Marianna Gaviria.
Other singles competitors for the Bullpups were Rachel Ivers, who went 2-3 for eighth place, and Riley Burghart, who finished in ninth place.
Emily Ediger and Holle came in second to an Ark City duo whose names were unavailable. Other MHS doubles teams were Brooke Bate/Taylor Swartzendruber, who went 3-1 for ninth place and Katlyn Riefschneider/Madison Hoffman, who went 1-2 and tied with teammates Shelby Gudenkauf/Caroline May for 11th place.
Katherine Geist and Cassidy Corrigan finished in 14th place with a 2-3 record, while Gretchen Heidebrecht and Heidi Myers finished 20th.
The Bullpups are next on the court Sept. 14 at the Salina Central Invitational.
