  • The McPherson High and Middle School cross country teams opened their seasons Thursday at the Concordia Invitational, with all four teams finishing in the top five.
The MHS boys’ team placed fourth behind a fourth place finish from Ryen Trost, who clocked in with a time of 19 minutes, 42.53 seconds. For the Bullpup girls, they placed third, with Christina Wankum taking gold medal honors with a time of 17:29.09.
“Overall, I am really pleased with the effort put forth by my runners today,” MHS/MMS coach Gentry Nixon said. “We started the day short a couple of varsity runners due to illness, and saw a couple more taken out by the course. So, our team scores are not where we expected them to be. However, I saw some very gutsy finishes by runners from varsity down to middle school that show a lot of promise for the future.”
The MMS boys finished second place on a mile course, with Cole Hansen placing seventh (6:23.53) and Carson Stone taking ninth (6:54.35). The middle school girls took second, with Mary Ann Wurm finishing first (6:28.08). Other top 10 finishers were Maggie Leaf at fifth (6:55.68), Hannah Dossett at eighth (7:06.45) and Jinae Spaich at 10th (7:18.83).
“It was really exciting to have all of our runners, middle school and high school, running in the same location,” Nixon said. “I think the high schoolers are definitely going to miss having the middle schoolers cheering for them.”
The next meet for the high school team is Sept. 12 at Hesston. The middle school next competes Tuesday at Hutchinson.
