Coming off an 0-4 performance at the Avila University Tournament, the Bethany College volleyball team headed to conference foe Ottawa University on Wednesday.
Looking to stop their five-game losing streak, the Swedes battled with the Braves, but came up winless as they fell 3-0; 16-25, 17-25, 11-25.
"We didn't play well as a team," Swede coach Nathalea Stephenson said. "It seemed as a team, we just couldn't get everyone on the same page at the same time.
“That is something we have to do if we are going to be successful. I felt like we didn't play with the focus we do in practice, and I am not sure why because this group is an amazing group of young ladies and are skilled players."
Ottawa out-hit Bethany with 40 kills compared to the Swedes' 22. The Braves defense stifled Bethany as the Swedes had a .061 hitting percentage on the night.
Senior Maria Bujanda led the Swedes with 11 kills, and junior Alexa Gerber added six. Freshman Eileen Vlamis tallied 13 assists as Gerber tacked on four. Senior Sarah Phelps totaled eight digs on the night while Gerber added five.
Junior Ariel Buhr and sophomore Quethzally Chaparro each contributed four digs in the match. Senior Kaitlyn Davis had two assisted blocks as senior Danielle Savage and freshman Whitney Williams had one assisted block each.
The Swedes are 0-2 in the KCAC and 2-7 overall. Bethany travels to the Johnson and Wales University Tournament in Denver, Colo., today and Saturday.
The squad faces Johnson and Wales University today at 2 p.m. On Saturday, Bethany plays Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University at 1 p.m. and Johnson and Wales University at 3 p.m.
