  • The Bethany College men's golf team competed at the Evangel Golf Tournament in Springfield, Mo., on Sept. 9 and 10.
The 54-hole tournament took place at Rivercut Golf Course (par: 72 yardage: 5,483).
The Swedes won the tournament (894), seven strokes ahead of second place Rockhurst University (901). Junior Ben Johnson won the tournament individually (217) three strokes ahead of teammate sophomore Greg Miller (220) who placed second.
"It is always nice to start the season out with a quality win," Swede coach Jon Daniels said. "Both Evangel and Baker are two leading teams in the Heart of America and it is Evangel's home course. Rockhurst is a leading team in their conference and they are an NCAA Division II team."
After rounds one and two were complete on the first day, the Swedes team was sitting in first place (303-292).
Miller was leading the tournament (72-71) by four strokes over Nick Arman of Rockhurst (72-75). Johnson sat tied for third (74-74).
At the completion of the final round three on Tuesday, Johnson had taken over the lead from Miller shooting a 69 to Miller's 77.
"We had some outstanding results," Daniels said. "Three freshmen in the top five was a good start. It was not an easy course. We still have work to do if we are to compete with the Top 25 in the Nation, particularly putting from six to ten feet, but I believe we are where we need to be at this point in our work and season."
The junior varsity team placed fourth overall (935).
The Swedes had other top ten finishes from Jose Acevedo (6th) and Oliver Rubenstein (7th). Lewis Blair (T13), James Tisdale (T16) and Manuel Collado (19) round out the top 20. Additional players were Jose Lelo DeLarrea (23), Chencetayl Chikwari (T36), and Jacob Hebbel (T40).
The team next competes at the Oklahoma Baptist Tournament in Shawnee, Okla., on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1.
