“Hey, it's good to be back home again.
Sometimes this old farm feels like a long lost friend.
Yes, and hey, it's good to be back home again.” -- John Denver
We decided it was time for one last roadside picnic, so we veered off of I-70 into the rest area just east of Grainfield, nearing the end of our West by Northwest vacation. We knew we were home as a host of uninvited flies soon joined us at the table.
Welcome back to Kansas. Welcome back to bugs. Welcome back to “unseasonably warm temperatures for the next few days,” said the rest area computer weatherman.
After 4,000 plus miles of driving, it was time to unpack. Time to turn the thermostat down from the 87 degree where we’d left it. Time to sleep in our own bed again.
It’s always sad to see the curtains close on vacation, but, yes, it certainly is good to be back home again. The soft, slow fade of the yolk of sun into the western Kansas sky behind us provided a fitting end to it all.
