Construction and traffic rerouting plans for Roosevelt and Lincoln elementary schools were approved by the McPherson City Commission Monday.
For Roosevelt, construction traffic is to take Avenue C from Main Street and stage on South Chestnut Street to keep construction traffic from driving on or blocking Avenue A. Construction traffic also will be prohibited from using Walnut Street from Avenue A.
Contractors will use the existing parking at the Free Methodist Church, 1010 Maple St. The church gave permission for its parking lot to be used.
At Lincoln, construction traffic is to take North Grimes to East Earl Street where the construction entrance will be to the south of the school. There is to be no construction equipment or fencing on Ash Street, and no heavy loads on Elm Street between Earl and Allison Streets.
Bringing in construction equipment and vehicles has been complicated by the First Street project, said Steve Schmidt, interim public works director.
“It if wasn’t for the First Street project, we would have the trucks go up First to access Lincoln,” Schmidt said. “The trucks just can’t make those one-lane corners.”
A lot north of the school on the other side of East Allison Street will serve as materials storage and contractor parking. Foursquare Baptist Church has granted permission for staff and parents to use the church’s parking.
Construction is expected to begin in the next several weeks, with a goal to be finished in time for the 2014 school year.
Michael Craig was appointed to another three-year term as McPherson Area Solid Waste Utility city representative. He gave a report to the city commission during a study session Monday.
As of Sept. 9, the majority of the dirtwork for the landfill expansion project had begun. Emphasis will be put on getting the cell work done so the liner can be installed before cold weather sets in.
Mike Tabor was hired to serve as the new landfill manager, effective Oct. 1. Formerly he was the director of solid waste services for Seward County for more than 20 years.
The concrete in front of the scale has been completed, and an additional lane had been installed south of the gate house.
In other business, the city commission:
Approved the purchase of up to $2,625 worth of grease control chemicals for use in the sewers.
Approved $1,165 for the fire department to update its national fire codes.
Approved a request to pay a $17,062 broker fee to Assurance Partners.
Approved the purchase of a new side-loader truck for single-stream recycling pick up.
