  • Bethany struggled to hold onto the ball Saturday against Avila University, turning it over seven times to the Eagles in a 41-14 blowout at Anderson Stadium in the KCAC-HAAC Challenge.
While only around 45 offensive yards separated the two teams, the Eagles took advantage of the Bethany miscues, including a 70yard touchdown by Avila’s Justin Davies after a blocked field goal in the first quarter.
The Swedes struggled from the opening drive, as starting quarterback Bo Savage, who earned the job last week after starter Justin Bane was injured, fumbled on both of his snaps. The second fumble was picked up by Chance Alberswerth, who ran it back 14-yards for the second Eagle score of the game.
Savage was pulled after the second fumble in favor of Zach Dovenbarger, who went 16-of-32 for 158 yards and a touchdown in the form of a 57-yard bomb to Rodney Molette with 7:18 left in the first half that pulled the Swedes to within six points, 20-14.
That was as close as Bethany would get, though they did hold Avila scoreless in the third, before the Eagles scored twice more in the fourth. Bethany put up 254 total yards of offense to Avila’s 298. Tevis Linnebur was the only Swede to get anything going on the ground, as he rushed for 100 yards, including a 51-yard run in the second quarter. The Swedes finished with 96 total yards rushing.
Steven Williams led Bethany in tackles with 12, including seven solo, and a sack. Milton Collins was credited with 2 1/2 sacks, while Oscar Segura and Tayler Stull both snagged interceptions.
Bethany (1-1, 0-0 KCAC) is at home to open the KCAC schedule Saturday, as they host an Ottawa team that is coming off a 20-6 win over Missouri Valley College. Kickoff at Anderson Stadium is at 7 p.m.
