Fresh off a 1-2 performance at the Johnson and Wales University Tournament September 13-14, the Bethany College volleyball team traveled to University of Saint Mary Wednesday in search of their first conference win.
The Swedes were unable to grab a "W" in Leavenworth, Kan., as the University of Saint Mary Spires downed Bethany 3-0; 18-25, 15-25, 9-25.
Bethany's offense struggled as the Spires held the Swedes to a .066 hitting percentage.
Junior Alexa Gerber and sophomore Bryanna Cool led the Swedes with seven kills each, followed by seniors Maria Bujanda with four and Kaitlyn Davis with three.
Gerber tallied eight assists as freshman Eileen Vlamis tacked on seven. Senior Sarah Phelps totaled eight digs as Vlamis added five and junior Ariel Buhr contributed four.
Davis added one block on the night.
"I felt we could go to Saint Mary's and take care of business with two really good days of practice, but our service receive wasn't there and we weren't mentally tough at all," Swede coach Nathalea Stephenson said. "That is something we struggle with in games lately. It is hard to win games when you give points away and teams don't earn points themselves."
The Swedes are currently 0-3 in the KCAC and 3-10 overall. Bethany hosts conference foe Sterling College on Saturday at 2 p.m.
