  • McPherson Middle School's seventh and eighth grade football teams split with Salina South Thursday, with the seventh graders falling 16-14 and the eighth graders winning 22-6.
Mason Alexander had a tremendous game at quarterback for the eighth graders, as he had three passing touchdowns and one on the ground. His passing scores went to Wyatt Siedl, Thomas Diggs and Ben Pyle.
"The offensive line of Alex Milleson, Luke Thompson, Brandon Wilde, Dakota Record and Kamren Jost worked hard all day to open up running lanes and protect the quarterback," MMS coach Brandon Labertew said.
In the seventh grade game, the A-Team came out firing against Salina South, with Kyler Hoppis connecting with Gabe Hoover for a 62-yard touchdown on the second drive of the game. Hoppis was 4-for-12 on the day, picking up 81 yards on what was a windy day.
He also had 36 yards rushing on seven carries, with a two-point conversion.
Honestee Whittker had the other Bullpup touchdown, a nine-yard push. He finished with 64 yards off of 12 carries. Shane Starkel led the team with 102 yards.
Defensively, Talyn Huff had seven solo tackles and one assist, with a sack for good measure. Brandon Wilson and Malik Lawrence both had five solo and one assisted tackles.
"Overall, we were very proud of the kids," Bullpup coach TJ Jackson said. "We saw a lot of growth in a short period of time in several areas. Half time adjustments were made and the kids came out and executed, and that shows these kids are willing to be coached and learn. We love to see that, and that will lead to bigger things for this group."
The 7th grade B-Team also played Salina South Middle School. Maliki Lakin came out again and had a big performance with 64 yards on 6 carries and two touchdowns. Mark Fincher also contributed with 2 carries for 5 yards.
Ben Hopkins completed a pass to Brandon Yowell for 7 yards.
Lakin was also the teams' leading tackler with 4.
The seventh graders are back in action Thursday at Great Bend.
