  • Bethany College will host a presentation by Ed Scharlau of the organization Water to Thrive about the need for clean water from 11 to 11:50 a.m. Wednesday in Burnett Center at Bethany College.
The presentation is free and open to the public. The presentation is hosted by Assistant Professor of Biology Lauren Ivan’s introduction to biology class.
Scharlau is a board member for Water to Thrive. He has previously presented at the Lutheran Educational Conference of North America President’s Meeting, where the presidents funded a well in Ethiopia.
Scharlau was present at the inauguration of the well on Aug. 11 in Wana in the village of Gunfan.
Water to Thrive originated in 2007 when a small Bible study group in Austin, Texas, concerned with the global water crisis, set a fundraising goal of $5,000 to establish one clean water well in Ethiopia. At the end of the fundraiser, they had met and exceeded their goal; they had collected enough money for 12 wells.
Dick Moeller, a member of the original group, wondered if one church group could raise that much support, what could a larger organization do?
He founded Water to Thrive, a faith-based non-profit dedicated to spreading awareness of the global water crisis while raising the funds needed to construct water wells for those who desperately need them in rural Africa.
Since its founding, Water to Thrive has funded more than 300 water projects in Ethiopia, Sierra Leone, Tanzania and Uganda and has helped more than 150,000 people. Learn more at www.watertothrive.org.
