Mt. Hope Sanctuary will have its fourth-annual Taco Tuesday fundraiser from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church.
Soft tacos, nachos, taco salads, desserts and drinks will be served.
Mt. Hope Sanctuary gives single women and children a place to stay and helps them become self-reliant. Taco Tuesday is its main fundraiser and helps cover the cost of its programs.
Candy Lundberg, executive director, said most women in the program come from abusive situations or divorces. She said the sanctuary offers a 90-day program that helps these women learn about seven life skills.
“The house allows them to live there as a support system while they address the challenges they face,” Lundberg said. “The essential thing is that the women have their programs.”
Women in the program come from all backgrounds and age ranges. There is no cost to the women, who can stay up to one year, so the program depends on donations and grants.
Entry for Taco Tuesday is a free-will donation, which goes to fund the program. Lundberg said it’s important that these women and children have places to go while they sort through their challenges.
“If a woman is living with two kids and struggling to pay rent and bills, she can’t work on making herself better,” Lundberg said.
