Leavenworth police have identified the body recovered last week in the Missouri River. But the man's name has not been released because police are still trying to notify family members, the police chief said today.
The body was recovered from the river Thursday south of the Riverfront Community Center by members of the Leavenworth Fire Department and Leavenworth Police Department. The body apparently had been spotted by people who were in a boat tracking sturgeon.
An autopsy was performed Friday afternoon.
"We have preliminary results (from the autopsy)," Police Chief Pat Kitchens said today.
But authorities are not yet releasing information about the possible cause of the man's death.
Kitchens said Leavenworth police will be coordinating with other agencies because the man whose body was found in the river is "likely not from here."
