McPherson Middle School’s seventh grade volleyball team sent both their A- and B-teams to Junction City Saturday.
The A-team went 1-2 during the tournament, falling to Abilene (25-16, 25-9) and Anthony (25-16, 25-22), but defeating host Junction City (25-19, 25-13).
The Bullpups started out in a different formation, starting in a 6-2 rather than their usual 4-2, but the shift proved to be difficult for the Pups to master.
“The girls struggled with knowing where to go,” MMS coach Dancia Fitzmorris said. “We had practiced this all week, anticipating we would try it. It just proved too difficult for us to handle this early in the season.”
McPherson shifted back in to a 4-2, where they found more success, with Fitzmorris calling the Anthony match the hardest of the tournament.
“We had a hard-fought match,” she said, “with outstanding back row play from Jaycee Burghart and Lauren Hein. Out big middle-hitters, Megan Eisenbarth and Meghan Smith did an awesome job of attacking the net.”
The B-team, meanwhile lost to Abilene (25-22, 25-6) but split with Junction City (25-22, 15-25) and Anthony (26-24, 15-25).
MMS is at home today against Salina Lakewood and Hays. Start time is at 3 p.m.
