Dwight Goering does a fair job thinking through Common Core national education standards, but he misses a few key pieces of information. First, while it is reasonable to say that kids learn math everywhere in a similar fashion, keeping state control of standards does not preclude this. The real question is when kids learn what concepts in math, and the after-the-fact debate on this topic has revealed that Common Core's learning progression puts kids two years behind the best state and international math trajectories by seventh grade.
Second, while he rightly notes that Common Core is not the only answer for education problems, he seems not to know that research has shown education standards have literally no effect on student achievement. A 2012 Brookings Institution study found that states with high standards did not have any higher student test scores, and states with low standards did not have lower test scores, on average.
Common Core sounds like a good idea, but so does world peace.
