  • MHS runners finish fifth at Mac Invitational

  • The McPherson High School cross-country teams fought a windy day at Rolling Acres Golf Course Thursday, with both varsity teams finishing fifth in the team competition.

  • The McPherson High School cross-country teams fought a windy day at Rolling Acres Golf Course Thursday, with both varsity teams finishing fifth in the team competition.
    In the junior varsity results, the Lady Pups had a sterling day, as they dominated the top five individually on their way to a first place finish, while the JV boys took third.
    The top individual finisher for the varsity team was sophomore Christina Wankum, who finished fourth with a time of 18 minutes, 5 seconds. She averaged a 7:16.6 mile for the course and was on pace to take first, but had some hip issues on the final leg of the course that slowed her down.
    As a team, the Bullpups finished fifth with a combined time of 1:38:25.24, with an average of 19:41.05. Their total score was 91. Hays took first in the varsity girls’ competition with a total of 1:32:56.25 and a team score of 47. Buhler, El Dorado and Salina South round out the top four, with seven total teams competing.
    Ryen Trost finished seventh in the varsity boys competition with a time of 19:12.18, averaging a 6:10.9 mile. Spencer Steinert had a top 15 performance, finishing the course in a time of 19:29.31 for 12th.
    The varsity boys had a total score of 104, with a combined time of 1:40:57.05, a little over three seconds over winner El Dorado. Hays and Salina South round out the top three, followed by Maize South at fourth.
    The JV girls saw four Bullpups take second through fifth place in the race, led by Katie Wurm, who placed second with a time of 21:15.55. Wurm was followed by Amy Suenram (21:28.28), Chelsea Regehr (21:38.66) and Christal Regehr (21:44.56).
    The Pups were first with a total time of 1:48:55.53 and 25 team points. Salina South was the next closest team with 1:54:23.98.
    Dalyn Chapman and Wyatt Hedlund both had top 10 finishes in the boys JV race to help the Pups win third. Chapman was fifth with a time of 21:43.54, while Hedlund was just behind in seventh (22.13.82).
    Hutchinson captured first place (1:50:34.64), followed by Hays (1:52:11.25) and McPherson (1:55:03.70).
    MHS is off now until Oct. 5, when they participate in the Newton Invitational.
