  • The Moundridge High School football team will see something of a homecoming starting 2014, as the Wildcats will move back down into Class 2-1A for football as announced Friday by the Kansas State High School Activities Association.
Moundridge, already in Class 2A for all other sports, has an enrollment of 134 students as of Friday afternoon. The Wildcats moved down to 2A from 3A in all sports but football last year.
“We knew that we would be moving down in classification in all activities,” Vance Unrau, MHS athletic director, said. “We were the smallest school in 3A in 2011 and the third smallest for football classifications/districts.”
For the Wildcats, Friday’s shift in classes is like coming home.
“We have spent the last 30 plus years playing all sports in Class 2A,” Unrau said, “with the exception of the 2011 year. I would say that is where we belong and feel the most comfortable.”
Moundridge was the only McPherson County school whose classification was adjusted with the latest update from KSHSAA. In the area, both Hesston and Hillsboro saw adjustments in their classifications.
The Swathers have shifted down to Class 3A from 4A immediately in all sports but football, and will move to 3A starting in 2014 in that sport.
Hillsboro, meanwhile has moved down to Class 2A in all sports but football from Class 3A. Their enrollment of 153 makes them one of the second largest schools in 3A, with the cut off range from 154 to 100 students.
