  • Kansas inventory of all hogs and pigs on Sept. 1 was 1.84 million head, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.
    This was down 3 percent from Sept. 1, 2012, and down 2 percent from June 1.
    Breeding hog inventory, at 170,000 head, was unchanged from both Sept. 1, 2012, and last quarter. Market hog inventory, at 1.67 million head, was down 3 percent from last year, and down 2 percent from last quarter.
    The June-August 2013 Kansas pig crop, at 834,000 head, was down 1 percent from 2012.
    Sows farrowed during the period totaled 83,000 head, down 3 percent from last year. The average pigs saved per litter was a record high 10.05 for the June-August period, compared to 9.80 last year.
    Kansas hog producers intend to farrow 86,000 sows during the September-November 2013 quarter, up 8 percent from the actual farrowings during the same period a year ago. Intended farrowings for December 2013-February 2014 are 85,000 sows, up 6 percent from the actual farrowings during the same period the previous year.
