McPherson High School football coach Tom Young has been selected as one of the eight best Kansas high school football coaches, according to a contest from USA TODAY High School Sports.
The contest, part of USA TODAY’s “Best of” series, aims to chose the best coach in each state, who will then move onto the regional and, possibly, the national rounds of voting.
Voting for the state rounds continues through Oct. 8, with regional voting to start Oct. 9. The national voting will end Oct. 29.
The winning coach will earn his athletic department $2,000.
Young, in the midst of his eighth year as the head coach at MHS, has compiled a record of 61-19, with league championships in the first seven years of his tenure, as well as seven straight playoff appearances.
The other seven Kansas coaches in the mix are Holton’s Brooks Barta, C.J. Hamilton of Silver Lake, Chuck Smith of Pittsburg-Colgan, Olathe North’s Gene Weir, Gardner Edgerton’s Marvin Diener, Randy Dreiling of Hutchinson and Tim Callaghan of Shawnee Mission West.
