  • he McPherson High School girls’ tennis team continued their winning ways Tuesday at the Goddard Invitational, as the team claimed first place over Conway Springs following a tiebreaker.
    The Pups, who moved up to No. 1 in the latest KTCA Class 4A poll, had three first place finishes on the day. Rachel Ivers won a tiebreaker to claim first place in the No. 1 singles division, as three different girls ended up finishing with a record of 2-1. Riley Burghart took first in the No. 2 singles bracket after going 3-0.
    In doubles play, the duo of Ashley Venable and Caroline May went 3-0 and took first in the No. 2 double bracket. Katherine Geist and Cassidy Corrigan went 0-3 and finished fourth in No. 1 doubles.
    McPherson finished with eight team points, followed by Conway Springs, Wichita Independent (6) and Goddard (2).
    The Pups move to first in the KTCA rankings was helped along by Wichita Collegiate being relocated to Class 3-2-1A after Friday’s classifications were announced.
    In JV play Tuesday, the Pups sent only three girls to the Newton JV Invitational. The No. 1 doubles team of Heidi Myers and Shelby Gudenkauf went 3-0 to take first.
    Gretchen Heidebrecht went 1-2 for fifth.
    The varsity was back at it today for the Wichita Collegiate Invitational that had been rescheduled from Saturday. The JV squad will participate in the JV AVCTL meet at Wichita Collegiate Thursday at noon.
